Risk Benefit Assessment

Hackney Play Association can provide advice and guidance on Managing Risk, based on the government guidance, Managing Risk in Play Provision, by Tim Gill, Bernard Speigal and David Ball.

Managing Risk in Play Provision sets out a new approach to risk in play moving from minimising risk to balancing risks against the benefits of provision. This approach has been endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive and the Government.

Health & Safety Executive Myths

The Health & Safety Executive has published a series of Myths concerning Health and Safety regulations, including the following on Play.

• Health and safety rules take the adventure out of playgrounds
• Kids must wear goggles to play conkers
• Children are banned from throwing snowballs
• Children need to be wrapped in cotton wool to keep them safe
• Adults can't put plasters on children's cuts
• Toy 'weapons' in a play had to be locked-up and registered with the police
• Every possible risk needs a safety sign
• If a pupil hurt then the teacher can be sued
